New Business:
Cary Belyea – SwimSafe Report
  • We have had a great start to the season. All mechanical devices are now working well (one controller needed to be replaced) and the grates have been upgraded to meet the Virginia Graeme Baker Act requirements. The update at the wading pool included steps being added and this has been a benefit.
  • 95% of the lifeguards are back from last year. There is a good mix of high school age and college age guards.
  • John Bennett is the Pool Manager; Paul Bronner is the Assistant Manager; and Alex Shadley is Head Lifeguard.
  • Diving lessons and swimming lessons went well the first two sessions. A few kinks developed, and only a few modifications should be needed next year. This year, students had the same instructor for the whole session.
  • Fourteen people has been the average for Adult Morning Swim. John Bennett may organize a Challenge for the group to wrap up the season.
  • July 4th brings about the pool games beginning at 2pm.
  • The lifeguards have not made any saves yet this year. Usually, by now, the guards have made at least two saves.
  • Commission commends Cary and his team for their great job; and the newsletters, handed out to the employees, are great.
Old Business:
  • Lifestyle Essentials Report
  • Summer Fitness Session started this week. Five of the seventeen offered classes were cancelled because of low pre-registration numbers.
  • David is looking at options to replace cardio equipment in 2010.
Director’s Report:
  • Sandra Murphy, Gorman Heritage Farm, contacted David about fencing at the farm. They are replacing fencing at the upper meadow but also adding new fences in some areas. They are planning to maintain a large area on both sides and adding access gates in various locations. At this time, there are no plans to cut off access to the trails for our residents.
  • The tennis courts have developed a few cracks; David has met with the contractor and is awaiting final options and costs. The courts are safe and playable so the repairs can wait until September. When the repairs are made the courts cannot be played on for two to three days.
  • All summer programs are going well. David will invite Chad Winkle, our swim team coach, to be at the August meeting to recap the season.
  • Arrangements are trying to be made for a friendly swimming competition between Evendale and Blue Ash.
  • The Recreation Commission will not meet in July.
Phi Lambda Pi Report:
  • Plans for the 50th Reunion are in place; and RSVP cards continue to arrive.
  • July 4th 10K Run goes off at 8am; and we are currently looking for volunteers. There is a volunteer meeting on July 1st.
  • The annual Phi pool party took place June 17th; next the group goes to Myrtle Beach at the end of July. A new 8th grade class starts in August.
Open Discussion:
  • The firehouse chili lunch was well attended. Phi sold tickets for this and received a portion of the sales.
  • We are expecting a large crowd for July 4th since Springdale and Sharonville have cancelled activities.
  • Gorman Heritage Farm’s mule team is doing well. We may add them to our Halloween Fest carriage ride. Gorman has a Tractor Jam upcoming in August.
Motion to adjourn made at 8:13am by Wayne Mosley; seconded by Stiney Vonderhaar. Motion approved.
